Who the hell is miguel

Miguel Torres is a Phoenix journalist. He digs through documents, talks to people, and stresses out over editing. He got into reporting after filling in as a cameraman at a fighting tournament in 2016 and got bona fide in 2022. His work has taken him through courtrooms, police departments, prisons, natural and unnatural disasters, public records and plenty of places where paperwork and people tell different stories. He also draws. Sometimes that's courtroom sketches, sometimes short story illustrations, and sometimes whatever dumb idea comes to mind. Drawing became another way for him to work through a story when he ain't good at words no more.

Past Lives

In the Air Force I learned to fix cars, tanks, firetrucks, MRAPs, and life size Tonka Trucks. Also learned to fix them in kevlar. Also to fix them while in Iraq. I also learned a lot about people.

Then I worked as a pipe-organ repairman's assistant. A what? A Pipe-organ repairman's assistant. It involved woodworking, metalworking, pipe tuning, and fending off the old man version of Norma Desmond. The less said about the better.

Grill cook on Grand Avenue in Phoenix for Bragg's Factory Diner. The spot was short lived but had mouth-wateringly good curry waffles, and a killer vegan Reuben. Also had karaoke.

Fine art installs. Hung and moved art in some of the nicest art collections in the state, owned by some of the worst people in the state. I touched a Warhol and ran a wood shop.
